Captain America : The First Avenger review (2011)

The next marvel film is captain America and this was one of the hardest films marvel had to do but I thought they did a great job on this film and it was better then I ever thought it would ever be.

This film is set in WW2 and sees a weakling in Steve Rogers who wants to fight for his country but is denied. He is then selected for a test to increase his physique and abilities to go against a tyrant who wants to destroy the world.

Now Chris Evans was the best part of the fantastic four films in my opinion and it was actually quite risky for him to come back to comic book films for the role. This is his better role and he is the perfect captain America, he felt so relatable as he was just a man that wants to do good and he is a good guy that wants to help everybody which is a great quality.

Hayley Attwell plays agent Carter and she is great in the film with her character feeling different to the other female characters in this universe and I really liked her relationship with captain America. Also Hugo weaving was perfect as the red skull and he made him a great villain that one day I want to see more of. Tommy Lee Jones was great as the head of the army and he was the comic relief for the film and it worked for this film. One performance that didn't really work was Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. We are meant to care about this character but we don't have allot of screen time with him so it is hard to care about him.

The story of Steve Rogers is great, with him becoming this awesome character from a humble beginning and it makes us care more about him. However, one thing I do question is red skulls motivation and it isn't really clear as to why he does this and that hurts the film.

The script is great and it has the right mix of humour, drama and action to make this a really interesting coming of age story for captain America.

The style is a bit of a mixed bag, there is some good action scenes that show how cool cap is but they also montage through allot of the action and that is frustrating. Also the use of sci fi lasers bugs me because it takes me out of the time period but also it makes me question how nobody got their hands on the tech in 70 years.

Overall this is a great film and one that is definitely worth watching.
