I am a massive fan of the original 300 movie and thought it is a bit of an underrated film. I have finally seen the sequel 300: Rise of an empire and even though it is not as good as the original 300 I think it is great.
This story is actually not a prequel or a sequel it starts before the events of 300 and then during the first film and then continues after the events of the first film. This story sees the army of Athens led by General themistokles as he tries to repel the Persian army of xerxes led by vengeful commander artemisia.
Now Gerard butler was great as the lead in the first film and the guy they got to play themistokles did a really good job. He was an awesome warrior, a great leader and also a relatable character.
The supporting cast is a bit of a mixed bag. Though the best performance in the film is Eva green who plays artemisia. Her character was evil and vengeful but after learning a bit about her back story you understand her reasoning and she was just so cool. Lena headey is in the film a small bit as team queen of Sparta and she does a good job even though she isn't in the film that much. The rest of the Athenians apart from themistokles just aren't interesting and you will not care about any of them.
The story is interesting with the time period they chose with it not being just a sequel but also a sequel. I liked it and it fed to the story of uniting all of Greece against xerxes and it kept the theme of the first film intact, that an act of bravery will inspire the rest of Greece to stand up against xerxes.
The script is a bit weak, it does still have some lines that make it feel more then just a simple action film and Eva greens lines are great. Though the rest of the Athenians dialogue is really not very good and you will not care about anything they have to say.
The style of 300 is really unique and gory and it is kept in this film with the cgi looking good and much better then other films that try and put all the money on their special effects. The Gore is over the top but that is what it is meant to be like and I wouldn't want it any different.
Overall this is a great film and I will definitely be looking to get it on blu ray.
