Fruitvale Station review (2014)

Now there are those films that are fantastic but are so disturbing that you don't even think you can see it again and fruitvale station is one of these films.

This is a true story about 22 year old Oscar grant and documents the last day of 2008 and documents his day with the people closest to him until he ends up in the fruitvale station and tragedy strikes.

Now Michael b Jordan does a fantastic job in the role and he truly encapsulates this real person and his real life performance makes the end of this film even more tragic and hard to watch.

The supporting cast is also great, melonie Diaz plays grants girlfriend and she also delivers a real performance that makes you feel for her character as well as jordan's. Octavia Spencer also does a great job as his mother and her character is the one that seems to be the moral centre of the film. The girl they got to play his daughter is really good and their chemistry is really good and makes you see grants human side.

The story is a little of a mixed bag. I was happy that they didn't make Oscar grant a flawless person they showed the real portrayal of the character and the way that he had flaws made you feel sorry for the whole thing at the end. Because this is a true story I sometimes take some boring parts as true to story but there are a few parts that the director has admitted didn't happen and I actually don't think these scenes were really that necessary. Now for the controversy, this film does portray the police in the situation and I actually think they did a good job in making them more sympathetic then they had to.

The script was great with all the dialogue feeling real and human. It was funny when it needed to be, dramatic when it needed to be and also heartfelt when it needed to be, it did conflict well which was necessary.

The style of the film works because of the fact that it isn't in a nice part in the world but nobody deserves the treatment that this man got and you really fill that in the way this film is made.

Overall this film is fantastic but is not always an easy watch.
