Full Metal Jacket review (1987)

I am a fan of Stanley kubricks a clockwork Orange and now i have seen his war film full metal jacket and I must say it is great.

The premise of this film sees a soldier who is becoming dehumanized by his altercations with war. First is his training boot camp and then being stationed in the Vietnam war.

Matthew Modine plays the lead soldier joker and he does an okay job I mean he does the soldier type character well like everybody else but we're meant to feel more for his character and to be honest I don't really, there is a scene towards the end of the film that makes him more relatable but it's a little late.

The supporting cast are the same with all of them doing a good job in there realistic roles, Adam Baldwin is in the film and he does a good job in his crazy role. There is a fantastic performance in this film and it is by the drill instructor, his character totally fitted the film and really carried the first 30 mins or more of the film.

The story is a bit of a mixed bag because this film is technically split in half really. I absolutely loved the boot camp scenes and I thought it really worked and part of me wished the whole film was in the boot camp but it wasn't. The parts in Vietnam are a mixed bag with a bit of down time and I don't think it went far enough in the severity of war. But there was some great action scenes and it made you feel with the soldiers. Also I thought the end wasn't great and could have been improved.

The script was really good and the dialogue felt right for an army boot camp and I think Kubrick encapsulated that really well. Even though the drill instructors lines were mostly not scripted but the dialogue is great.

The style is fantastic, kubricks style really worked for the war film and the cinematography really made you feel like you are with the marines and on the mission with them.

Overall this is a great film that I will definitely be looking to get this on blu ray and you guys should see it too.
