I have heard allot of good things about this film and I think the premise of the film could be really cool but unfortunately this film blew it and becomes just an average film.
This film chronicles a woman's personal journey on a 1,100 mile hike to try and get over a personal tragedy and restore her life.
Now Reese Witherspoon is a good actress and she has received an Oscar nomination for this performance and I must say with the utmost respect that this must have been a weak year for leading ladies. I thought she did an okay job in the role but her character was actually quite bland and actually seemed like quite a bad person, in some of the flashback scenes she is showed in a really bad light and by the end of the film I just think this character hasn't changed as much as she should have on this crazy hike.
Laura Dern has been nominated for her role in this film and once again I feel like it must be weak. Even though she is good in the film her character isn't really featured that much to become overly attached to her character. Witherspoons brother and ex husband are not interesting at all and everybody she meets on the trail are completely forgettable.
The story as I said at the beginning had the potential to be fantastic and really emotional and sometimes it shows some instances of this but not enough. There needed to be more emotional scenes and more time with characters that we had to care about it. I also think the idea of the hike was mostly forgotten, this is a true story and this accomplishment is made to easy in this film and the hugeness of the challenge should have been Augmented and I feel like a different director could have done this.
The script is okay with some of the dialogue being interesting but as I said allot of the characters don't have anything interesting to say and come across as bland.
The cinematography is great and the backgrounds of the hike look absolutely fantastic. But this film's style of film making makes it feel really really slow and I thought this film was like 2 1/2 hours and it turns out it's 35 minutes shorter then that which I couldn't believe.
Overall this film is completely average and I know you have heard the hype but unless your really interested don't bother with this film.
